DOG (Canis lupus familiaris)

A domestic mammal belonging to the Canidae family (order Carnivora) is the dog (Canis lupus familiaris). It is related to jackals and foxes and is a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). One of the two most common and well-liked household pets worldwide is the dog (the other is the cat). It has coexisted with people for over 12,000 years as a hunting partner, a guardian, a source of admiration or contempt, and a friend.

Different regions of the world have different attitudes toward dogs. Dogs have gained a significant place in Western society due to their loyalty, friendship, protectiveness, and affection, and their care and feeding have grown to be multibillion-dollar industries in both the US and Europe. The relationship between humans and dogs is highly valued in Western civilization, but dogs are not as highly regarded in many Asian countries and some developing countries. While dogs are protected and cherished in the US and Europe, they are used as guards, beasts of burden, or even as food in other parts of the world. When the pharaohs ruled ancient Egypt, dogs were revered as sacred animals. See More..

Origin and history of dogs

Ancestry

About 60 million years ago, a small mammal that resembled a weasel lived in the areas that are now part of Asia, according to findings from paleontologists and archaeologists. Miacis is the genus that gave rise to the animals that are now referred to as canids, including wolves, foxes, dogs, and jackals. Dog-like canids evolved from Miacis, but it did not leave any direct descendants. About 30 to 40 million years ago, Miacis gave rise to Cynodictis, the

first real dog. It was a medium-sized animal with a long tail and a fairly brushy coat that was longer than it was tall. Two branches of Cynodictis emerged over the millennia, one in Africa and the other in Eurasia. Known as Tomarctus, theEurasian branch is the

According to genetic evidence, dogs are directly descended from wolves (Canis), and between 27,000 and 40,000 years ago, the lineages of extinct wolves that gave rise to dogs split off from the line that gave rise to contemporary living wolves. There is disagreement over when and where dogs were domesticated. However, there is compelling genetic evidence that the first domestication events took place between 14,000 and 29,000 years ago in northern Eurasia. By following nomadic people in northern Eurasia and eating the carcasses of game animals that hunters left behind, wolves in this area most likely helped domesticate themselves.

Role in human societies

Dogs were among the first animals to be domesticated and have played a significant role in the history of human civilization. In hunter-gatherer societies, they played a crucial role as bodyguards against predators and hunting allies. Dogs were used to herd and protect sheep, goats, and cattle when they were domesticated some 7,000–9,000 years ago. Dogs are primarily used for companionship and social interactions, though many continue to serve in these capacities. Dogs are now used for police work or as guides for the blind and disabled. In hospitals and assisted living facilities, dogs are even utilized in therapy to help patients heal. Dogs with diverse adaptations to perform a range of tasks have been bred by humans. The advancements in veterinary care have improved this. See More..
